Vance is Denver’s man

So it’s official. After a week of head coaching interviews Miami Dolphins Defensive Coordinator Vance Joseph has been announced as the new Head Coach of the Denver Broncos. Vance previously played for Colorado in college so has ties with the area. He has signed a four year contract and will now turn to hiring his coordinators which is potentially the biggest decision.

On the offensive side of the ball the front runners are Mike McCoy and Bill Musgrave. Both would be great picks to help develop Denver’s young QBs. McCoy has head coaching experience in San Diego and is formerly a Broncos Offensive Coordinator so would be reprising the role he held from 2009-2012. On the other hand, Bill Musgrave was the brains behind the Raiders breakout season on offence and has helped to transform Derek Carr into an MVP candidate prior to his devastating injury.

With Wade Phillips’ contract up this season it is looking more and more likely that he will be parting company with Denver. Phillips is a huge fan favourite amongst the Denver faithful and players and it will be a huge blow if he left. However, the players will still be here and with defensive backs coach Joe Woods, hugely popular amongst the players, likely to be promoted it will be a sense of continuity for Denver no matter what.

Back to Vance, and his leadership qualities are no doubt the main reason behind his hiring. Prior to this Denver has had just one permanent leading coach, be it head coach or coordinator, from an ethnic minority in 57 years so it’s an important hire on that front. Moreover, Denver could have two if Joe Woods becomes the Defensive Coordinator. Vance will be the guy who can bring the big personalities in the locker room together while the coordinators will call the plays and look to transform the offence. But he also played quarterback in high school and college so will have excellent knowledge to move the team forward.

After sitting down for four hours with all three head coaching candidates, John Elway will have certainly thought long and hard with Joe Ellis before making this decision, and as the best General Manager in the league there is no doubt about Vance’s ability and that he is the right man for the job. All Broncos fans should get behind him, and hope for a successful few years ahead with an exciting, young Head Coach.

  1. Hey, I’m a die hard Broncos fan living just south of Denver, Colorado; and I think it’s super cool that there are real fans over there in the UK. Go Broncos, we’ll get them next year!
